The Future Of Work, From Someone Who Never Had A Job

I speak about the future of work.

I have never had a job. I am a coder and an architect, not a manager.

What I Say

There is a role everyone in tech needs to learn.
You describe the work, then read it, then fix it.

The goal is not a job.
The goal is real value, for someone who needed it.

The hard part is measuring that value.
Hours worked is the old answer. It no longer fits.

I do not have the whole answer.
I have one measure, and I test it in the open.

I never held a job, and I am not a manager.
I am the idea person who can build the idea.

The money, the taxes and the company were run with others.
I stayed with the work. That may be the view this topic needs.

What People Leave With

  1. The role to learn: describe, read, fix.
  2. Three questions that separate busy work from value.
  3. One measure you can try on your own work this month.

Questions I Would Bring

  1. How would you measure the value of your last week?
  2. What did you do that a machine now does?
  3. What did the person who paid you actually receive?
A good question beats a prepared speech.
